Tallinn, Estonia is a stunning city. It’s known for being on of the most well-kept medieval cities in Eastern Europe. Most visitors come to Tallinn to see the city’s Old Town, encircled by a medieval city wall and plenty of watchtowers. But Tallinn has so much more to offer than just what’s in the Old Town. Luckily, the city has an easily accessible tram system that picks up at the entrance to the Old Town and drops off near all of the sights listed below, making it so easy to explore more of Tallinn.
On your trip to Tallinn, I recommend spending at least 1 day exploring what Tallinn has to offer outside of the city walls.
What To Do In Tallinn Outside of the Old Town
Kadriorg Park
Located to the East of the Tallinn Old Town, Kadriorg Park is a beautiful green space within the city. The park has a few different ponds and fountains throughout, as well as a few notable museums. Both the Kadriorg Art Museum and Kumu Art Museum are located within in the park. Even if art museums aren’t your preferred activity, the Kadriorg Art Museum is worth visiting just to see the building itself. Built in 1718, the building was initially constructed by Tsar Peter the Great of Russia as a palace. The building served as a residence for many years. First for Russian rulers then for the Head of the State of Estonia before becoming an art museum.
Also within the park you’ll find the Office of the President of the Republic of Estonia. It’s not the most exciting looking building from the outside, but still fun to see where the country’s government does their work.
Telliskivi Creative City
Visiting the Telliskivi Creative City was one of my favorite things in all of Tallinn, Estonia. This neighborhood is located just outside the city walls. You can either walk or take the tram to get here. What was once an industrial area is now home to a really colorful and lively new neighborhood. Old buildings and warehouses have been converted into restaurants, bars, and shops. It’s a great example of repurposed space. Throughout the neighborhood are dozens of colorful murals brightening up old walls. This is a great place to spend some time wandering, taking photos, and stopping for a snack or drink during a busy day of exploring.
Balti Jaama Turg Market
Adjacent to the Telliskivi Creative City and Tallinn’s main train station is the Balti Jaam Turg market. This market is massive and has everything you could want. Spanning 3 stories, the market has so many shopping options. The first floor has a supermarket which I am always a fan of walking through in new countries. Supermarket’s are great ways to find different foods and unique flavors of common foods like chips. On the main floor is a food hall with stalls selling all sorts of grab and go meals and drinks. There’s also a wet market selling fresh meats and vegetables on the main floor. The upper floor is a collection of clothing stores selling everything from new to vintage items. There are also a few sit down restaurants on this floor.
The market is so interesting just due to its size and collection of shops! It’s definitely a place to visit while in Tallinn, Estonia.
