Quirky America
Driving along Interstate-40 through the Texas panhandle can be tedious. It’s long, often windy, and other than Amarillo doesn’t have many large towns to stop in for breaks. But it does have one quirky roadside attraction – Cadillac Ranch.
Located just West of Amarillo along an Interstate-40 frontage road lays Cadillac Ranch. This ranch isn’t a ranch at all but is instead an art installtion standing in a large open field. These cadillacs were placed in this field in the 1970’s and have stood tall ever since. In total 10 cadillacs have been placed nose-down in the earth so they stand tall. Over the years these cadillacs have been spray painted over and over as visitors add their own artwork to the installation. This is one of the only places I know of where graffiti is not only allowed but encouraged.
It’s fun to wander around Cadillac Ranch looking at each car. Due to all of the graffiti and just general wear and tear over time, each car is different. Over time some of the cars have come to miss parts of their bodies, like doors and hoods. All of the cars have been completely covered in spray paint. Take time to admire the work other visitors have done and add your own if you choose.
Cadillac Ranch is a quick stop if you’re driving through the area and are looking for a fun, quirky pit stop. If you want to add to the installation, don’t forget your spray paint but remember to clean up after yourself and bring your sray paint can back to your car!
